Laurel Woods Railroad Hike

About 30 people gathered at the Laurel Woods Trail on a chilly spring morning to learn about the two historic railroads in Landenberg. The hike began at the parking lot and the group paused at points along the trail where guides described the planning, construction, politics, business and failures of the Pomeroy & Newark and Wilmington & Western Railroads. Highlights included peering into the deep rock cut of the Pomeroy & Newark at the midpoint of the trail, viewing the remnants of the dam that provided water for steam locomotives, and seeing the stone abutments of one of the bridges along the White Clay Creek.
For more information about the railroads, please see the history section of the website or view a video (March 2011) of a brief presentation of the Pomeroy & Newark at the unveiling of an interpretive sign and platform overlooking the railroad cut.
